Historically the renovation market has always proved to be very robust and the current Covid crisis has proved to be the same. During the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), the new home building and commercial construction markets fell by 40% to 50% around the world. These markets are closely tied to overall economic activity.

The renovation market, however, is driven by much longer-term trends such as urban drift, increasing population density, escalating land prices and long-term increases in property value. In the GFC, renovation activity saw only a single digit decline in all markets that we operate in (UK, New Zealand, Australia and USA).

There are two factors behind this: firstly, demand stays high, and secondly, finance remains available because banks are happy to lend against the asset of the house. During the Covid 19 pandemic we have seen a very similar pattern and in many markets actually seen a rise in demand.
